As a small group of concerned citizens gathered into the small, humble conference room of the Park County Environmental Council office on Thursday, March 19th to discuss a potential new landowner, all I could think of was Murphy’s Law and the luck of the Irish. Gosh, I look at this map and I am jealous! A great view of the river, river access, the Livingston Irrigation Canal going right through it, and potential future development. Not to mention, all for a 25-year lease!
And there’s no zoning, so our little bit of heaven can enjoy 24/7 noise and truck traffic along with the delightful rock n’ roll summer concerts at The Old Saloon! It’s a great opportunity for the State to make some big bucks, and the county to purchase gravel that it can’t afford. I checked out a few of the environmental impacts that didn’t paint such a bright picture, but the one that got my attention is the pungent, heavy, sweet smell of fresh asphalt. If the wind blows in the right direction during one of the summer concerts at the Old Saloon, it just might be a nice additive to the noise of grinding rock and double belly dumpsters passing by the grandstands in the early evening. After all, with no zoning, anything is possible! I plan on checking in with a couple of the county commissioners and even attending a local meeting with some neighbors if they decide to come on down to our neighborhood! I’m sure whatever happens, the outcome will be a benefit to everybody—especially if these constant deteriorating gravel roads get paved!
