Likeness: The Art of Seeing Each Other will be on display at the Livingston Center for Art and Culture from February 10th through March 7th. Co-curated by Executive Director Kathy Bekedam and Board Member Ashley Noble, Likeness embraces the many ways artists capture connection, empathy and individuality.

After reviewing the artist submissions, Ashley said, “Each artist approached the theme differently. We have realistic, abstract, symbolic—everything is very subjective, which is pretty cool.”

Participating Artist Julian Harake, who has three works in the show, is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the School of Architecture at MSU, saying “It's a different take on the theme. I think with all the images I work with, they get to a point when you're able to read something into them, like a tip on the tongue feeling. You’ll think, “that reminds me of something. It’s almost like looking at a cloud.”

Another participating artist, Hannah Uhde, has two paintings in the show. She said, “I love the show’s theme. Whenever I'm starting a piece, whether I'm thinking about sadness or grief or contentment or tranquility or anger, I pull out what I'm starting to see or feel. Neither of my pieces in the show is an exact representation of a particular person—they’re more like a vague nod so everyone can see themselves in them.”

The public is invited to an Artists Reception on Friday, February 20th, from 6 to 8 pm. The Center is located at 119 South Main Street in historic downtown Livingston. For more information, contact Executive Director Kathy Bekedam at (406) 222-5222 or visit http://livingstoncenter.org/
