Wheatgrass Books is pleased to welcome author, poet, and filmmaker Maggie Dewane for a poetry reading and nature-inspired haiku writing workshop on Saturday, February 7th at 3 pm. The event will feature a reading from Dewane’s new book, Haiku and Hope: 50 States of Climate Change, followed by an interactive workshop designed to introduce participants to the art of nature journaling and haiku.

In this hands-on workshop, Dewane will guide attendees through a reflective nature journaling exercise that encourages close observation, curiosity, and creativity. Participants will explore how haiku can serve as a vehicle for expressing a deeper connection to place. By the end of the session, everyone will have crafted an original haiku inspired by a meaningful or memorable landscape. Sharing is welcomed but not required, making the workshop accessible to writers of all levels.

Haiku and Hope: 50 States of Climate Change showcases Dewane’s journey across all 50 states as she documents America’s landscapes through paired haiku—one reflecting the present moment, the other imagining the future. The book also features a narrative section that delves into her travels, inspirations, and the emotional experience of encountering the country’s changing environments. Blending poetry, personal storytelling, and environmental awareness, Dewane’s work offers readers both a celebration of natural wonder and a call to stewardship.

Maggie Dewane has traveled to all seven continents to better understand climate change, conservation, and the interconnectedness of people and place. Through films, journalism, and poetry, she translates climate science for broad, accessible audiences with the aim of inspiring action.

This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
