Elk River Arts & Lectures and Elk River Books present a reading and conversation featuring writers Taylor Brorby and Joe Wilkins. This free event will take place Thursday, October 15th, at 7 pm at Elk River Books, 122 S. 2nd Street in Livingston. Doors open at 6:30 pm with remarks at 7 pm.
Joe Wilkins, a poet, novelist, and nonfiction writer, is the author of The Entire Sky, Fall Back Down When I Die, The Mountain and the Fathers, and When We Were Birds. Wilkins’ newest book, Every Sky at Home: Essays on Landscape and Family, reckons with the author’s inheritance of landscape and loss, and catalogs his travels across the country. Each essay endeavors to understand the landscapes that continue to shape Wilkins and his family. His work has earned widespread acclaim and numerous awards and honors, including the Oregon Book Award and the Montana Book Award.
About Wilkins’ writing, novelist Mark Spragg says, “It’s the musicality of Joe Wilkins’s prose that first takes your breath. Words chosen as instrument, every line a chord. His melodies transport you into the very heart of what it means to be human. But what alters you forever is his honesty—the rarity of it.”
Taylor Brorby is the author of Boys and Oil: Growing Up Gay in a Fractured Land, Crude: Poems, Coming Alive: Action and Civil Disobedience, and co-editor of Fracture: Essays, Poems, and Stories on Fracking in America. His work has been supported by grants and fellowships from the National Book Critics Circle, the MacDowell Colony, the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Mesa Refuge, and Blue Mountain Center. He is an assistant professor at Montana State University, where he teaches nonfiction writing and is the Haynes Faculty Fellow.
For those who can’t attend in person, the event will be live-streamed on the Elk River Books YouTube channel. For more information, email info@elkriverbooks.com or call (406) 333-2330.
