Where Students Experience the Effect of Math in Real Time
Bozeman Field School, an independent high school focused on place-based learning, took an unusual field trip for Algebra 1 students to experience the effect of math in real time. The school strives to provide hands-on, experiential education whenever possible.
Recently, this was put to the test, literally, as Algebra 1 students visited Spire Climbing and Fitness to compete in a “Barbie Bungee Jump” contest. By using linear regression graphs, students computed the ideal number of rubber bands for Barbie to drop from 16 and 35 feet, getting as close to the ground as possible without hitting her head. Students examined in real time the accuracy of their models, based on data gathered from drops of less than four feet.
The purpose of this activity is that by providing students with examples of why the application of math is important for things like safety—not just on paper, since Barbie is falling!—Algebraic concepts are appreciated and retained more readily than when math problems are presented solely in worksheet formats.
Bozeman Field School is now accepting applications for the 2026-2027 school year in all grades from 9-12. Please reach out to Admissions at admissions@bozemanfieldschool.org with questions or to schedule a tour.
