Federal Funding will Engage AmeriCorps Members in Montana

HELENA — The Governor’s Office of Community Service pleased to announce that Montana has received $1,674,749 in funding from AmeriCorps. The total funding amount is granted to the Montana Commission on Community Service, the Governor-appointed State Service Commission, which in turn awards the grants to nonprofit organizations and public agencies across the state. 

“National Service in Montana fulfills a dual mission to meet local needs while developing AmeriCorps members while they serve. These 60 positions provide opportunities for communities and those who are ready to engage in getting things done for our people and places. Citizen service is uniquely American and as we celebrate America's 250th here in Montana and across the nation we are grateful to all who serve with AmeriCorps."

The 2026 AmeriCorps competitive grants provide $1,674,749 to Montana supporting over 60 AmeriCorps members throughout the state. Later this summer, $1,183,503 in funding will be provided to support additional AmeriCorps members serving in state agencies and the Montana university system.

  • Big Sky Watershed Corps, Montana Conservation Corps, Inc., $1,149,770, 46 members: Big Sky Watershed Corps engages individuals to make measurable contributions in environmental stewardship and build capacity of local agricultural and rural watershed organizations throughout Montana.
  • Justice for Montanans Project, Montana Legal Services Association, $524,979, 21 members: AmeriCorps members serve to assist income eligible Montanans access information and resources needed to resolve their civil legal problems. Members leverage volunteer attorneys to provide pro bono and reduced civil legal services.

AmeriCorps will make available $495,465 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards for AmeriCorps members serving under these grants. After successfully completing a full term of service, AmeriCorps members each receive an Education Award up to $7,395 to repay qualified student loans and current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.

Since 1994, more than 11,000 Montana residents have served more than 11 million hours and have earned Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $29.2 million. Across the country, AmeriCorps engages more than 200,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors in service annually with nonprofit, faith-based, and community organizations in more than 35,000 communities.
