Elk River Books and Elk River Arts & Lectures present a slideshow and lecture by Kirby Lambert, curator of collections for the Montana Historical Society, where he’ll discuss his book, A History of Montana in 101 Places. The event will take place on Thursday, September 10th, 2026 at Elk River Books, 122 S. 2nd St., Livingston. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the program begins at 7 pm.
A History of Montana in 101 Places is a visually driven historical guide published by the Montana Historical Society Press and Farcountry Press. Lambert’s discussion will focus on how and why the book was composed, how featured places were chosen, and a broader conversation about why historical places are important.
Kirby Lambert is a public historian, author, and museum professional who dedicated nearly four decades to preserving and celebrating the heritage of the Treasure State at the Montana Historical Society. During his 37-year tenure, Lambert served in key leadership roles, including Curator of Art, Curator of Collections, and Manager of the Outreach and Interpretation Program.
An expert in regional material culture, he curated nearly three dozen major exhibitions, organized the annual Montana History Conference, and co-authored several definitive regional histories, including A History of Montana in 101 Places, A History of Montana in 101 Objects, and Montana's Charlie Russell: Art in the Collection of the Montana Historical Society. He holds a Master of Arts in Museum Studies from Texas Tech University and lives in Helena, Montana.
