Elk River Books and Elk River Arts & Lectures present a reading from Miriam Horn, environmental advocate and filmmaker, who will share from and discuss her biography of renowned field biologist George Schaller, Homesick for a World Unknown: The Life of George B. Schaller, on Thursday, July 9th, at the bookshop located at 122 S. 2nd St. in Livingston. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the program begins at 7 pm.

Homesick for a World Unknown is the first-ever biography of Schaller, the founding father of wildlife science and conservation. Schaller remade our understanding of animals and how to study them, training Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and three generations of wildlife scientists in 32 countries, including China, India, Afghanistan, Tanzania and Brazil. Booklist described Homesick as, “An invaluable portrait… as lavishly specific as its subject’s lifework… Electric with Schaller’s dramatic and audacious pursuits… All charged by his resounding belief that ‘every being has an equal claim on life and freedom.”

This is Horn’s fourth book. Her first, Rebels in White Gloves, told the stories of the women who graduated from college with Hillary Clinton. Earth: The Sequel, about clean energy inventors, was a New York Times bestseller and made into a Discovery Channel documentary. Her most recent, Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman, was made into a documentary that premiered at Sundance. Horn was a senior writer for U.S. News and World Report and a freelance writer for Vanity Fair, The New Republic, The New York Times, and other publications. Before turning to books, Horn  worked at the Environmental Defense Fund and the U.S. Forest Service.
