The Danforth Museum of Art (DMA) is excited to present Passages, an exhibition of new work by Livingston artist, Carla Pagliaro.
Pagliaro’s large, immersive canvases navigate a space between representation and the surreal, exploring the relationships between reality and intuition. Through repeating formal elements and motifs, such as divided compositions, expressive baroque sculptures, and sensuous floral elements, Pagliaro outwardly explores her inner life. Each painting is an invitation to reflect on one’s own thoughts, emotions and reactions to the work, and perhaps the world at large.
Pagliaro welcomes viewer engagement, musing: “I don't think there's a right or wrong way to look at paintings. The viewer responds either positively, negatively or not at all. I purposely give the paintings purely descriptive or numerical titles because I don't want to direct what the viewer sees or feels.”
After studying art history in college, Pagliaro attended the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Following art school, she enjoyed a successful career as a scenic artist in the film and television industries. Pagliaro’s impressive set of technical skills, acquired from years of painting realistic backdrops and architectural surfaces, allow her to paint intuitively yet with remarkable attention to detail.
Pagliaro has made Livingston her home since the early 1990s. Her long tenure places her in the local cannon of important Park County artists – artists the Danforth Museum of Art is proud to support.
The Opening Reception for Passages coincides with Livingston’s July Art Walk on Friday, July 24th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.
